Text  Leslie C. Pahl Jr., 48, farmer, participant in area markets
    July 02, 2003|By Jacques Kelly | Jacques Kelly,SUN STAFF
Leslie Charles Pahl Jr., a fifth-generation Baltimore County farmer who was one of the first participants in the downtown and Towson farmers' markets, died of cancer Monday at Gilchrist Center for Hospice Care. The Granite resident was 48.
Born in Baltimore, he was raised on a family farm that had belonged to his great-great-grandfather, Peter Gompf, who emigrated from Germany in the 1850s and bought 30 acres. When he grew too old to till the land, his children drew straws for parts of the Pikesville farm near the Milford Mill Metro station.
Mr. Pahl began full-time farming in his senior year at Milford Mill High School. He inherited portions of the original tract, and at age 20, he purchased acreage at Granite adjoining Patapsco State Park.
