    • Shoemaker. (From the Baltimore City Directory).

Peter and John Gompf first lived on Little Green St. and Pearl St. These are in the heart of modern downtown Baltimore, within a block of the still-there Lexington market.

"my father ... had said Peter lived in Baltimore. ... he says at least 2 of the 3 brothers lived on little Green St. and Pearl St. He doesn't say which one Peter lived on.
... The N-S streets from Eutaw are in this order: Eutaw, Paca, Green, Pearl going west. So Peter possibly just walked out the back of the shoe shop, across the alley and was home on Green. Baltimore St. runs E-W and is the dividing line for street numbers. Note that German St. is just south of Baltimore St. About a mile west on Balto. St. is the Catonsville Depot. Convenient! " email from Betty Nordwall, 15 Sep 2010 [We suspect that Peter attended Catonsville Lutheran Church, now known as Old Salem.]

    • He is a Shoemaker. Value of personal estate = 1500.

The 1860 Census lists two children born that year: Peter and George. They are 2 months old and the census was taken 26 July 1860. This isn't possible, given that Henry's was born 24 Jun 1860. Possibilities:
      1. They hadn't decided on a name for Henry yet
      2. Perhaps baby Henry was crying and the census taker thought that two names = two babies
      3. Henry was a twin and the other didn't survive, except that "Henry J" has neither "Peter" nor "George" in his name.

    Bought
    • 30 acres near what is now the Milford Mill Metro station.
The original deeds, recorded in books 37-100 and 69-427 at the county clerk's office in Towson, MD, read: "March 20, 1863; Peter Gompf from George L Shank & Wife." And "March 4, 1871; Peter Gompf from D. C. H. Emery & Trustees." "From stone standing by the side of the road leading from Wm. Barnett's to Files old Mill in the second line of Jackson's Chance and running thence 6 acres more or less."
"I'm still thinking about when Peter moved to Howardsville. My parents were very sure that Henry was 1 year old.
Peter came over in 1845 so he did have time to establish himself as a shoemaker in Baltimore and save money. Maybe Peter had an oral or handshake agreement to buy property from George Shank, and spent time clearing an area (the hard part) and putting up a 1 room log cabin (relatively easy). They could have lived and slept in a covered wagon for the summer. Pioneer life was not easy, but desperate immigrants did anything they could to get a foothold. (The more I read about the history of Pikesville and especially Reisterstown Road, the road was filled with covered wagons by 5 or 6 am as farmers moved their produce into the Baltimore markets. They were common then.)
By 1863 he had enough to pay for the first portion to Mr. and Mrs. Shank. I don't know how much he paid for it. But handshake deals meant something in those days and people were seldom cheated especially not from respected land owners like the Shanks. It's a possibility....." email from Betty Nordwall, 13 Sep 2010

    • "The [Gompf/Pahl] farmhouse, still standing today, was built in the Spring of 1891 by a couple of German carpenters. I know this because when we were adding a closet to the upstairs bedroom in 1967 (when I got married the first time), we discovered a board, sealed up in the wall that was written on in pencil with that information. I'm certain Janie & Les still have the board. It is my understanding (as told to me) that originally Peter (and Catherine) Gompf purchased/owned the property on Campfield & Bedford Rds. and divided it up between the three sons to build on and farm. Apparently they drew straws to see which parcel of land each would receive. Henry got the one on the left, closest to the road (where George & Minnie later lived). George P and Minie got the one back off the road, where Clarence & (daughter) Lilly Pahl later lived, and John & Christina got the property on the right, closest to Campfield Rd. I believe all 3 houses were built around the same time (early 1890's), but I don't know where the parents (Peter & Catherine) lived."] email from Ron Jolly 19 Apr 2010]

    • We believe Peter was one of the founders of St James Lutheran church.

The original church was built on Old Court Road (about 3 blocks from Mt. Olive Methodist Church and cemetery), dedicated on June 9, 1851, and originally called "St. Jacobi".
The second church was built on the corner of Liberty and Rolling road (about 1-2 miles from the first structure). The cornerstone was laid on June 19, 1892. The present name of "St. James" was chosen and recorded in January, 1894.
The third church building was erected on the opposite corner of Liberty and Rolling Road (across the street from the second structure) and dedicated on May 6, 1923 (minus the pointed steeple top which was added later, and the parsonage which was added in 1930.

"if the church [St. John's Lutheran] was founded in 1848 and Peter didn't move to the area until 1860 or 1861, he wouldn't have been in on the original founding. But the records do exist....." (Betty Nordwall, email, 9/7/10)
