Gazette of the United States (Phiadelphia)
    • "On what foundation stands the "PATRIOT'S pride."
"A Mr. Gumpf, of this borough a few weeks ago was accidentally wounded in the body in such a manner as that his life was and is full despaired of. Mr. Gumpf has been an honest, hard-working man, with a wife and several small children. the distress of his family was such as very properly to induce the circulation of a subscription paper for procuring aid. The case was so very affecting and urgent that even the members of the legislature were individually applied to who contributed generally and generously. Mr. Gumpf having been a warm friend to the election of Mr M'Kean, it was thought proper to present the paper to him also; not doubting that the governor of Pennsylvania, the man who has been emphatically [called?] the "friend of the poor," would contribute generously, at least to one of his voters. But alas! how grievously has public opinion been disappointed. One of the Gentlemen who presented to him the subscription paper, introduced the business by saying, "We have called upon your Excellency for a little charity for a distressed man."
Governor. "You have called upon the wrong person for charity."
Gentleman "The present, sir, is a particular tale --Mr. Gumpf was shot by accident in the body, is now unable to assist himself, and his family are in great distress."
Governor. "I can't help that. I can't contribute to support the poor of Lancaster county. I will give any man an hundred dollars who will pay my poor tax in Philadelphia."
Here we are told the conversation ended; and here, for want of time, we must desist from making any explanatory remarks; 'tho' we do not hesitate to promise that if even the present friends of the Governor, will impartially listen, we will clearly convince them in less than two months, that the Governor of Pennsylvania is far from being that kind of republican which they thought him."

He married Margaret Klein on 12 Feb 1786 (Records of St. James Episcopal Church) by whom he had 6 daughters and 4 sons. The tax list in 1801 noted that he was "wounded by a shott." He was listed as a laborer (1800), a "pedlar" (1808-14), "lame" (1817-29) and "billiard keeper" (1830-43). He was listed as a gunsmith in Bryson's Dir, 1843 in the same shop as Johan Christopher Gumpf. [Gunsmiths of Lancaster County, p. 27]

On the application for membership of the sons of the American Revolution for Willard Chambers Gompf, he lists Michael's date of death as 26 Oct 1841.
