    "The Life of Robert Fulton"
    • "In the summer of 1779, Robert Fulton evinced an extraordinary fondness for inventions. He was a frequent visitor at Mr. Messersmith's and Fenno's gunsmith shops, almost daily ; and endeavoured to manufacture a small air-gun. One of Mr. Jacob Messersmith's apprentices, Mr. Christopher Gumpf, who was at the time eighteen years of age, used frequently to accompany his father, Deter Gumpf, to the Conestoga on fishing excursions, Mr. Deter Gumpf being an experienced angler, and very fond of fishing, and he was pleased to have the company of Christopher and Robert. The old gentleman had a small flat-boat, which he had kept secured to the trunk of a tree by a chain and padlock, for his own accommodation. He generally required the boys to pole the boat to different parts of the creek in the neighbourhood of Eockford, the country-seat of General Hand, which at that time was the most secluded, deeply shaded, and quiet neighbourhood along the Conestoga. Returning homeward one evening, Fulton observed to Christopher that he was very tired using that pole, and Christopher coincided with him that the labour was too severe.

Robert absented himself a week, having gone to Little Britain township to spend a few days at his aunt's ; and while there he planned and completed a small working model of a fishing-boat with paddle-wheels. On leaving his aunt's, he placed the model in the garret, with a request that it should not be destroyed. Many years afterwards, that simple model was the attraction of friends, and became, instead of lumber in the garret, an ornament in the aunt's parlour, who prized it highly. "
    Military  1778-1781
    Revolutionary War
    • "On the eighteen day of March A.D. 1833 personally appeared in open court...[in] the county of Lancaster...Christopher Gumpf, a resident of the City of Lancaster, State of Pennsylvania, aged 72 years....I was born in the town or Borough, now City of Lancaster in the County of Lancaster and the State of Pennsylvania, October 26, 1760."
"That he entered the service of the United States in the year 1778, as a militia man. My captain was John Hubley of the town or borough, now City of Lancaster in the County of Lancaster & State of Pennsylvania. Our company left Lancaster in the year 1778, to the best of my recollection, for Shamokin. The first class of the Lancaster County Militia was called into service amounting to between seven and eight hundred men. Our company went from Lancaster to Middletown thence to Harris's Ferry House on the Susquehanna River, where we remained one night--thence up the river to a place called Coxes Town, when we remained about a week. The other companies who were called into service from Lancaster County concentrated here. All the companies then took up their line of march across Peter's Mountain over to Charles' Ferry, on the Susquehanna River, thence we crossed over--from thence along the said river to a place called Celins Grove--thence on to the town of Sunberry when the companies were ordered to their several posts. Our company was stationed at the said town of Sunberry, whence we remained to the best of my recollections about two months, when we returned home to the Borough of Lancaster, when we arrived the evening before Christmas. In a few days we were discharged. I was in service to the best of my present recollections between two and three months, at least two months, Major Shaufler was our commander."
"The following year 1779, I again entered the service of the United States for two months, as a Militia Man. My captain was Samuel Davis of the town or borough, now City of Lancaster. We assisted, my company, in guarding British prisoners of war at the Lancaster Barracks. I stood guard and was on duty for two months."
"I again entered the service of the United States as a militia man for two months--the year I do not remember. My Captain was John Widle, of the said Borough of Lancaster. I stood guard at Lancaster Barracks for the said two months."
"I left the Borough of Lancaster in the year 1781--to the best of my recollection, for Shepardstown, now in Jefferson County in the State of Virginia where I again entered the service of the United States as a substitute for Thomas Shepard, a militiaman in Captain Beddinger's Company. We left Shepardstown and went on to a place called Battletown, when the battalion met. Our captain could only raise as militia twenty one men, 19 from Shepardstown and two out of the battalion. After being in service from three to four weeks, we again marched back to Shepardstown--we had been called out for forty days encampment."
Transcribed by Timothy H. Smith. From an affidavit in the Revolutionary War Pension Records of Christopher Gumpf, dated March 18, 1833. These records are on Microfilm at the National Archives in Washington D.C. but can also be viewed online (with a paid membership) at Footnote.com.

    • "(Johan) Christopher Gumpf (1760-1844) gunsmith. John Christian Gumpf was born on 26 Oct 1760 (TLC). 1787-1840, Lancaster city. On 24 Apr 1786 he married Anna Maria Scheid (1763-1841) and they had 8 children, 6 of whom took up gunsmithing: Jacob, Henry, Mathias, (John) George and Andrew (and Christopher). (TLC III, 265) Johan Christopner died on 6 Oct and was buried on 7 Oct, 1844 (TLC IV 547) He was first taxed in 1785 an inmate laborer. In 1788 he was living with whitesmith Abraham Henneberger. In 1789 he was taxed as a "gonsmith" and in 1792 as a "Reiffel smith." Christopher was a contributor to the General Hand state government arms contract, c.1794, making 100 guns. He lived on the 2nd block, east side, N. Queen St. (Bryson's Dir, 1843)"

"Stoephel Gumpf, gunsmith. From 1789 through 1797 the name appeared of Stoephel Gumpf as a gunsmith in Lancaster city. We believe that it is clear that this was actually John Christopher Gumpf, above. "

His nickname was Stoephel. This was a German nickname for Christopher (also Stoffer, Toffel). It is basically the 2nd half of the name. Like the current American nickname Tofer.
